Chinese Zodiac: Animals, Elements & Your Year

The Eastern zodiac doesn't ask what month you were born — it asks what year. Twelve animals in a repeating cycle, each colored by one of five elements, produce a 60-year wheel of character and timing that most Western apps completely ignore.

Born in January or early February? The Chinese year starts at Lunar New Year (late Jan–mid Feb), so you may belong to the previous animal. Always check the exact date for your birth year.

The five elements

Each year also carries Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal or Water — so you're not just a Dragon, you're a Wood Dragon (1964, 2024) or a Water Dragon (1952, 2012). The element tempers the animal: Fire Tigers burn hotter, Water Tigers flow subtler. The full combination repeats only every 60 years.

Compatibility trines

Animals directly opposite on the wheel (six years apart) traditionally clash — Rat–Horse, Ox–Goat, Tiger–Monkey — which reads less like doom and more like 'requires translation'.

Frequently asked questions

What is a Ben Ming Nian (your own animal's year)?

When the cycle returns to your birth animal (every 12 years), tradition calls it a challenging, transformative year — classically softened by wearing red. Practically: expect an identity-review year.

How does the Chinese zodiac differ from Western astrology?

Western astrology reads the sky's snapshot at your birth moment; the Chinese system reads cyclical time — year, month, day and hour animals. One is a photograph, the other a calendar rhythm.

What are the hour animals?

Each 2-hour block of the day also has an animal (11pm–1am is Rat, and so on). Your birth hour animal is sometimes called your 'secret animal' — the private you.
